I plan to introduce legislation that will authorize the use of aftermarket brake light strips on vehicles driven on Pennsylvania roadways. You’ve likely seen these light strips on some vehicles, as many drivers install them as an additional safety feature to improve visibility.

The idea for this legislation came about after a constituent reached out to me, having been pulled over for having a self-installed brake light strip on his truck, which you can see in the attached photo (see attached the constituent's brake light strip). Upon reviewing the situation, I learned that these lights are classified as "ornamental lamps" and are currently only permitted if installed by the vehicle manufacturer.

To address this issue, I have worked closely with the Pennsylvania State Police to draft legislation that will allow aftermarket brake light strips to be legally used on vehicles, provided they are installed in a way that prioritizes safety. Additionally, this legislation aims to reduce the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in determining whether these lights were installed by the manufacturer or the vehicle owner.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Isaac Evans in my office at ievans@pasen.gov or 717-783-3555.
