In 2023, more than half of the 250,000 jobs added in the energy sector were in renewable energy and jobs in renewable energy grew at more than twice the rate of the overall U.S. labor market.  Additionally, per the U.S. Energy and Employment Report published in September 2024, renewable energy jobs comprise more than 40 percent of the country’s 8.35 million people employed in the energy industry.  Regrettably, as of 2023, Pennsylvania ranked 45th in the nation in energy production from hydropower, solar and wind according to data from the federal Energy Information Administration.

Fortunately, Lake Erie is a treasure trove of opportunities for Pennsylvania.  The potential development of renewable energy projects on Lake Erie can help stimulate both the local and state economies, create good family-sustaining jobs, and support environmental conservation efforts.

For these reasons, I am proposing a resolution that would direct the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee (LBFC) to conduct a study and issue a report on the feasibility and potential benefits or drawbacks of developing offshore hydropower, solar, and wind energy projects on Pennsylvania's portion of Lake Erie.

By understanding the potential environmental impacts and ensuring responsible development, Pennsylvania can lead the way in embracing renewable energy while growing our economy in the process.
