Technology is ever-changing. As items evolve and are outsourced to consumers, they seek to be convenient and safe until they aren’t. AirTags, an Apple product launched in 2021, is one such example of a technology designed to improve consumers’ lives that has also been used to harm users. AirTags are intended to help you find items that you have misplaced, such as your keys, wallet or bookbag, using a tool called precision finding. However, in some instances, predators have placed AirTags onto victims’ vehicles to track their location.

Although Apple itself has implemented preventative measures to combat such incidents, such as a notification system to alert users of AirTags within a user’s vicinity, I believe that more needs to be done to combat the threat that remote stalking poses. I intend to propose legislation which would prohibit people from using a technological device to track a person’s location without permission. This offense would be a misdemeanor of the third degree.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to ensure we protect our most vulnerable and hold stalkers accountable for their actions.
