I intend to reintroduce legislation that would require sky lanterns to be anchored and tethered to ensure public safety and to reduce the potential for devastating wildfires.

Sky lanterns, small hot air balloons made of paper with a flame-heated opening, rise into the air when lit but descend unpredictably when the flame extinguishes. While often used for celebrations, they pose serious hazards when released unattended.

The National Association of State Fire Marshals has labeled sky lanterns as “uncontrolled fire hazards” and is advocating for strict regulation, including a complete ban similar to restrictions on airborne fireworks. This highlights the significant risks posed by these devices. Uncontrolled sky lanterns can cause devastating fires, particularly in dry conditions, and their remnants harm animals, which can ingest the debris and suffer injury or death.

However, it is important to note that this legislation does not ban the use of sky lanterns but instead requires that they be anchored and tethered. This simple measure would mitigate the risks to animals, property, and communities across Pennsylvania while still allowing individuals to enjoy the tradition safely.

I urge you to join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to enhance public safety and protect our environment from unnecessary harm.
