Presently, multi-story residential buildings are not always required to have more than one elevator. Residents who live in multi-story apartment buildings or condominiums with elevators also have no guarantee that an elevator will be in operation.

I was contacted by residents of a multi-story building that had an elevator outage. This outage left residents only the stairs to use, which was a burden for older adults and individuals with disabilities who either had difficulty or could not use the stairs. Some residents unable to use the stairs were left with no option but to remain at home, missing appointments and losing the ability to take out trash or grocery shop.

I am introducing legislation to help solve this dilemma. My bill will require all newly constructed apartment buildings and condominiums to have no less than two elevators. Further, it provides that at least one of the two elevators must be operational unless the circumstances that caused the elevators to stop were out of the control of the owner.

This bill ensures that tenants of apartment buildings and condominiums will not be burdened if an elevator is not functional for an extended period of time. In addition, it will protect some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to require multiple elevators in multi-story residential buildings.
