Pennsylvania’s gas tax, the Oil Company Franchise Tax, is one of the highest in the country. It increases the cost of living for our constituents and adds to the cost of doing business in the commonwealth.
Taxes add $0.576 per gallon of gasoline and $0.741 per gallon of diesel. Putting that money back into the hands of our constituents would reduce the pinch that people are feeling because of inflation.
To be clear, I’m not proposing that we replace the gas tax with any new fees or taxes. Our constituents have to prioritize their spending and so should the General Assembly. With general fund revenues of over $40 billion, and special funds that have been on autopilot for years, we have the ability to replace the revenues from the gas taxes and prioritize how taxpayers’ hard-earned money is spent by the General Assembly.
I hope that you will join me in sponsoring this important legislation to eliminate the Oil Company Franchise tax.
