In the near future, we will introduce a resolution designating the month of April, 2025 as the “Month of the Military Child” and April 15, 2025 as “Purple Up! for Military Kids Day” in Pennsylvania.

Established by former Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger in 1986, the designation of the Month of the Military Child is a way to call attention to the special challenges faced by children who have one or both parents in the military.  More than two million U.S. children have parents serving in the military, with over 37,000 being Pennsylvanians. Eighty percent of children in military families are in kindergarten through grade 12 and attend public schools. The adjustments military children must make with frequent moves, parental deployments, an inconsistent network of supportive adults, and reintegration with every change, requires strength and courage. 

In recognition of military children and to show appreciation for the many sacrifices they make, our resolution will also designate April 15, 2025 as “Purple Up! for Military Kids" Day in Pennsylvania. On this day, individuals are encouraged to wear purple  which symbolizes all branches of the armed forces in support of military kids and their families.
