In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to amend the real estate tax exemption for Pennsylvania’s veterans.

Current law provides for property tax exemptions to all veterans who are 100% disabled as a result of wartime service and need financial assistance. My legislation removes the wartime service requirement provision, which would expand the program to include 100% disabled veterans who suffered service-related injuries during times of peace.

Wartime service should not be a qualification in our state’s property tax exemption program, as soldiers frequently risk severe injuries during non-combative operations and exercises. Those veterans who suffered debilitating, life-changing injuries as a result of their service to our nation, regardless of the time period, deserve an opportunity to receive assistance through this program.

This legislation was previously introduced last session as Senate Bill 947 and co-sponsors included: Phillips-Hill, Brown, Boscola, Costa, Hutchinson, Robinson, Dillon and Muth.

I hope you will join me in recognizing the contributions of all disabled veterans by cosponsoring this important legislation.
