As public servants, we are elected to represent our constituents and promote the general welfare of our communities. Whether serving as a county council member or the Governor, every elected official takes an oath to faithfully discharge the duties of their office with integrity. However, this becomes increasingly difficult when an official is facing criminal conviction.

To ensure greater accountability, this constitutional amendment would require elected officials to resign upon conviction of a crime. Specifically, it would direct courts to interpret Article VI, Chapter VII of the Pennsylvania Constitution in its original intent. Under current case law, courts have interpreted this provision to mandate removal only after sentencing, rather than upon conviction.

Once convicted of a crime, the public can no longer trust an elected official to fulfill their duties. Additionally, the public attention generated by such a conviction can distract from important decision-making across all levels of government. Without this legislation, a convicted official could remain in office until sentencing, causing unnecessary disruption to government functions and daily operations.

For these reasons, we urge you to join us as a co-sponsor of this legislation, which would require the resignation of any elected official upon conviction of a crime. Your consideration of this important measure is greatly appreciated.
