A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the month of November 2024 as "Complex Regional Pain
2 Syndrome Awareness Month" and recognizing November 4, 2024,
3 as "Color the World Orange Day" in Pennsylvania.
4 WHEREAS, Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), also known as
5 reflex sympathetic dystrophy, is a chronic pain condition that
6 usually affects a single limb after an injury to the peripheral
7 and central nervous systems; and
8 WHEREAS, CRPS is more common in women but can occur in anyone
9 at any age, though it is rare in the elderly and young children;
10 and
11 WHEREAS, Most cases of CRPS are triggered by bone fractures,
12 sprains, burns, cuts, surgery, receiving a needle injection or a
13 limb immobilized in a cast; and
14 WHEREAS, CRPS patients suffer from continuous, intense pain
15 that gets worse over time and may spread throughout the entire
16 affected area; and
17 WHEREAS, Other common symptoms of the condition are swelling,
18 joint stiffness, muscle weakness or spasms and sensitivity to
1 touch or cold; and
2 WHEREAS, There is no cure for CRPS and patients may require
3 several different treatments for the condition, including
4 medication, physical and occupational therapy and behavioral
5 management; and
6 WHEREAS, Increasing public awareness and understanding of
7 CRPS and supporting the efforts of researchers, clinicians and
8 advocates who are working to find better treatments and a cure
9 are a top priority; and
10 WHEREAS, "Color the World Orange Day" is a global initiative
11 that encourages people to wear orange clothing or accessories
12 and light our buildings, bridges and landmarks in orange to show
13 solidarity with CRPS patients and to raise funds for CRPS
14 research; and
15 WHEREAS, Some patients succeed in recovering from the
16 condition, while others suffer permanently; and
17 WHEREAS, Additional research is needed in order to better
18 understand and treat CRPS; therefore be it
19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
20 month of November 2024 as "Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
21 Awareness Month" and recognize November 4, 2024, as "Color the
22 World Orange Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge the
24 importance of "Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Awareness Month"
25 and "Color the World Orange Day" as an opportunity to educate
26 the public and the medical community about the symptoms,
27 diagnosis and management of CRPS and support efforts to improve
28 the lives of people living with CRPS.
