A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing the month of October 2024 as "National Sensory
2 Processing Disorder Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, The month of October is recognized as "National
4 Sensory Processing Disorder Awareness Month" to raise awareness
5 of sensory processing disorder; and
6 WHEREAS, This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Sensory
7 Processing Disorder Foundation, which works to educate and raise
8 awareness of sensory processing disorder; and
9 WHEREAS, A sensory processing disorder influences the way the
10 brain receives, organizes and responds to sensory signals,
11 causing abnormal reactions in affected individuals; and
12 WHEREAS, Disorganized sensory signals can lead to problems
13 with daily functioning, family relationships, social situations,
14 behavior, regulation of emotions, learning or self-esteem; and
15 WHEREAS, The disorder can manifest as an individual being
16 uncoordinated, difficult to engage in conversation or play,
17 extremely upset from being wet or hearing loud noises or having
18 an extremely high or low pain tolerance; and
1 WHEREAS, Approximately 1 in 20 individuals have a sensory
2 processing disorder and individuals who are gifted or have
3 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism or fragile X
4 syndrome are most at risk; and
5 WHEREAS, Often, sensory processing disorder goes undiagnosed
6 or misdiagnosed; and
7 WHEREAS, "National Sensory Processing Disorder Awareness
8 Month" is designed to bring parents, educators, therapists and
9 other caregivers together to raise awareness of sensory
10 processing and how it affects children and adults on a daily
11 basis; therefore be it
12 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of October 2024
13 as "National Sensory Processing Disorder Awareness Month" in
14 Pennsylvania.
