A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the year of 2024 as the "Year of the Franklin
2 Institute" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, Samuel Vaughan Merrick and William H. Keating
4 founded the Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania for
5 the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts on February 5, 1824; and
6 WHEREAS, The Franklin Institute is the most visited museum in
7 this Commonwealth and a top-five tourist destination in the City
8 of Philadelphia; and
9 WHEREAS, One of the leading science centers in the country,
10 the Franklin Institute's mission is to inspire a passion for
11 learning about science and technology; and
12 WHEREAS, The Franklin Institute Awards Program is the
13 nation's oldest and most prestigious recognition of achievement
14 in science, technology and industry; and
15 WHEREAS, The honor roll of more than 2,000 Franklin Institute
16 Award laureates includes Nikola Tesla, Marie and Pierre Curie,
17 Orville Wright, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Frank Lloyd
18 Wright, Stephen Hawking, Jane Goodall and Bill Gates; and
1 WHEREAS, The Franklin Institute's programmatic offerings
2 serve a range of audiences, with a focus on underserved youths
3 in Philadelphia and beyond; and
4 WHEREAS, The Franklin Institute's partnerships with cultural
5 organizations and corporations support unique collaborative
6 outreach initiatives and events, including youth programs that
7 build leadership skills, provide mentorship opportunities and
8 open paths to formal education and careers in science and
9 technology; therefore be it
10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
11 year of 2024 as the "Year of the Franklin Institute" in
12 Pennsylvania; and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate the
14 200-year anniversary of the Franklin Institute and commend the
15 Franklin Institute as a prominent educational and cultural
16 resource and an anchor of the local economy; and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
18 Pennsylvanians to join in honoring this milestone and endorse
19 the Franklin Institute's commitment to public education and
20 creating a passion for science.
