A RESOLUTION
1 Designating October 17, 2024, as "Chuck Tanner Day" in
2 Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, On July 4, 1928, Charles William "Chuck" Tanner was
4 born in New Castle; and
5 WHEREAS, Chuck Tanner was an American professional baseball
6 player and manager; and
7 WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner appeared in 396 games in Major League
8 Baseball between 1955 and 1962 playing for the Milwaukee Braves,
9 Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner batted .261 with 21 home runs; and
11 WHEREAS, While with the Braves, Mr. Tanner hit a home run off
12 the first pitch in his first career at bat; and
13 WHEREAS, A manager for all or parts of 19 seasons, Mr. Tanner
14 led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a World Series Championship on
15 October 17, 1979; and
16 WHEREAS, In 2006, Mr. Tanner was invited to be a coach in the
17 2006 All Star game and threw out the ceremonial first pitch; and
18 WHEREAS, In 2007, the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh began the
1 Chuck Tanner Baseball Manager of the Year Award which was
2 awarded to a manager in Major League Baseball; and
3 WHEREAS, In 2010, a second award was presented for the Chuck
4 Tanner Collegiate Baseball Manager of the Year and the original
5 award was renamed the Chuck Tanner Major League Baseball Manager
6 of the Year Award; and
7 WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner was known for his unwavering confidence
8 and infectious optimism; and
9 WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner died on February 11, 2011, at 82 years of
10 age in New Castle after a long illness; therefore be it
11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
12 October 17, 2024, as "Chuck Tanner Day" in Pennsylvania; and be
13 it further
14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
15 celebrate the life and achievements of Chuck Tanner and urge all
16 Pennsylvanians to join in honoring the legacy of Chuck Tanner
17 and his contributions to Major League Baseball and the
18 Pittsburgh Pirates.
