A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing the week of September 16 through 20, 2024, as
2 "National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week" in
3 Pennsylvania and encouraging all residents to learn more
4 about the importance of adult literacy and participate in
5 activities that support and strengthen this Commonwealth's
6 literacy achievements.
7 WHEREAS, Access to quality adult basic education and literacy
8 programs is the key to empowering people to enhance their
9 skills, pursue career pathways and actively participate in civic
10 life; and
11 WHEREAS, A literate and educated workforce contributes
12 significantly to the economic growth and prosperity of this
13 Commonwealth, ensuring innovation, productivity and
14 competitiveness; and
15 WHEREAS, More than 22% of adults in this Commonwealth
16 experience literacy issues that significantly impact their
17 lives, families and work and limit their full participation as
18 residents of this Commonwealth; and
19 WHEREAS, Many high school dropouts do not have the literacy
1 skills to complete their education, transition to postsecondary
2 education or vocational training or become employed; and
3 WHEREAS, Adults deserve access to adult education resources
4 that provide the scaffolding to good jobs; and
5 WHEREAS, "National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week"
6 highlights the need for this Commonwealth to support efforts to
7 ensure that everyone has the necessary literacy skills to
8 succeed at home, at work and in society; and
9 WHEREAS, The Senate supports the educators and students
10 enrolled in programs throughout this Commonwealth; therefore be
11 it
12 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of September 16
13 through 20, 2024, as "National Adult Education and Family
14 Literacy Week" in Pennsylvania and encourage all residents to
15 learn more about the importance of adult literacy and
16 participate in activities that support and strengthen this
17 Commonwealth's literacy achievements.
