A RESOLUTION
1 Celebrating the 77th anniversary of the United States Air Force
2 and the Air National Guard.
3 WHEREAS, The United States Air Force was originally created
4 on August 1, 1907, as the Aeronautical Division of the United
5 States Army Signal Corps; and
6 WHEREAS, The United States Air Force became the United States
7 Army Air Forces in 1941 and functionally acted as an independent
8 branch during World War II; and
9 WHEREAS, President Truman signed the National Security Act on
10 July 26, 1947, aboard his VC-54C presidential aircraft named
11 Sacred Cow; and
12 WHEREAS, The first Secretary of the Air Force, W. Stuart
13 Symington, was sworn in on September 18, 1947, marking the
14 official birth of the United States Air Force and Air National
15 Guard; and
16 WHEREAS, The United States Air Force was newly independent
17 and unprepared when the Korean War began and, despite this,
1 entered the war within the first week to provide transportation,
2 evacuation and intelligence and delay the advance of enemy
3 forces while allies could prepare for a counterattack; and
4 WHEREAS, The United States Air Force served many roles in the
5 Vietnam War, such as training the South Vietnamese Air Force,
6 providing reconnaissance, establishing air control, providing
7 supplies, evacuating medical patients and performing
8 counterinsurgency, bombings and close air support; and
9 WHEREAS, The United States Air Force has served a vital role
10 in the War on Terror by helping maintain combat readiness,
11 global reach, global vigilance and global power while
12 maintaining an agile, adaptable, persistent, lethal and surge-
13 ready air, space and cyberspace force; and
14 WHEREAS, The Air National Guard units in several states,
15 including this Commonwealth, have provided emergency response
16 during disasters in the states and around the world to assist
17 local police, aid in search and rescue operations and provide
18 humanitarian food and medical services to communities in crisis;
19 and
20 WHEREAS, The motto of the United States Air Force is "Aim
21 High ... Fly-Fight-Win"; and
22 WHEREAS, The motto of the Air National Guard is "Always
23 Ready, Always There"; therefore be it
24 RESOLVED, That the Senate celebrate the 77th anniversary of
25 the United States Air Force and Air National Guard.
