A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing November 10, 2024, as "Marine Corps' Day" in
2 Pennsylvania in honor of the United States Marine Corps'
3 249th anniversary of its founding.
4 WHEREAS, On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental
5 Congress met in Philadelphia and passed a resolution calling for
6 two battalions of Marines to be raised for service as landing
7 forces with the fleet; and
8 WHEREAS, That resolution established the Continental Marines
9 and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps; and
10 WHEREAS, Since the United States Marine Corps' first
11 amphibious raid on March 3, 1776, the United States Marine Corps
12 has fought with great courage on every continent and in every
13 conflict in American history; and
14 WHEREAS, During World War I, the United States Marine Corps
15 fought the famed battle at Belleau Wood, establishing the
16 reputation of toughness and fierceness; and
17 WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps played a central role
1 in the liberation of the Pacific Islands during World War II;
2 and
3 WHEREAS, "Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima," the famous
4 photograph by Joe Rosenthal, will always symbolize the triumph
5 and glory of the United States Marine Corps; and
6 WHEREAS, The momentum of the Korean War shifted when the
7 United States Marine Corps, in conjunction with the United
8 States Navy, launched a massive amphibious attack at Inchon,
9 surprising the North Koreans by putting thousands of United
10 States troops behind enemy lines; and
11 WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps participated in major
12 offensives of the Vietnam War, engaging in guerrilla warfare,
13 implementing unconventional techniques for counterinsurgency and
14 working as military advisors to the Republic of Vietnam Marine
15 Corps; and
16 WHEREAS, From 1990 to 1992, the United States Marine Corps
17 participated in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert
18 Storm, leading the liberation of Kuwait and the defeat of Iraqi
19 forces; and
20 WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps made significant
21 contributions to the war on terrorism as part of Operation
22 Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
23 WHEREAS, Marines truly embody the motto of the United States
24 Marine Corps: "Semper Fidelis," which translates from Latin as
25 "always faithful," and signifying the defense of freedom and
26 democracy worldwide; and
27 WHEREAS, Today, the United States Marine Corps is a separate
28 branch of the United States Armed Forces, distinguishing itself
29 as an expeditionary force ready to respond on the ground, in the
30 air and by sea; and

1 WHEREAS, There are approximately 180,000 individuals
2 currently enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and nearly
3 35,000 reserve members; and
4 WHEREAS, United States Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 192,
5 written by Major Commandant General John A. Lejeune, established
6 the mandatory celebration of the United States Marine Corps'
7 anniversary; therefore be it
8 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize November 10, 2024, as
9 "Marine Corps' Day" in Pennsylvania in honor of the United
10 States Marine Corps' 249th anniversary of its founding.
