A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the month of November 2024 as "Veterans and Military
2 Families Month" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, On November 11, 1918, the Great War (World War I)
4 officially ended when Germany and the Allied Nations signed an
5 armistice; and
6 WHEREAS, A year later, November 11 became known as "Armistice
7 Day" to honor those who fought and to celebrate the end of the
8 war; and
9 WHEREAS, On that day at 11 a.m., the hour the armistice had
10 been signed, two minutes of silence were held as an act of
11 respect; and
12 WHEREAS, In 1953, a motion was proposed to rename Armistice
13 Day as Veterans Day to honor those who served in all conflicts
1 and wars; and
2 WHEREAS, In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed into law a
3 bill designating November 11 as the official day of observance
4 of Veterans Day across the United States; and
5 WHEREAS, Every year on November 11, the United States comes
6 together to honor the veterans who have served and sacrificed
7 for their country; and
8 WHEREAS, To observe Veterans Day, a wreath is laid at the
9 Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 11 a.m. followed by a parade of
10 the colors by veterans' organizations in what is known as the
11 Veterans Day National Ceremony; and
12 WHEREAS, Communities across the country also commemorate
13 Veterans Day with parades and other local celebrations to honor
14 our veterans; and
15 WHEREAS, Veterans Day serves as both a way to teach and
16 remember United States history and a celebration of patriotism;
17 and
18 WHEREAS, Veterans have sacrificed their livelihoods and
19 families and have endangered themselves to protect others from
20 oppression; and
21 WHEREAS, Veterans utilize the skills learned from their time
22 in the military, such as discipline and leadership, and
23 integrate them into their communities for younger generations to
24 model; and
25 WHEREAS, As of 2022, Pennsylvania has the fourth-highest
26 veteran population; and
27 WHEREAS, The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs
28 assists veterans of this Commonwealth by providing information
29 on job opportunities, tax exemptions and mental health services;

1 WHEREAS, Because 7 out of 100 veterans will suffer from post-
2 traumatic stress disorder in their lifetime, it is increasingly
3 crucial to make mental health resources available to veterans;
4 and
5 WHEREAS, November 11 encourages us to take the time to
6 acknowledge the sacrifices that veterans make every day; and
7 WHEREAS, Nationally, "Veterans and Military Families Month"
8 is historically recognized in November to honor those who served
9 and the families that support them; and
10 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives must honor the
11 sacrifices made by our veterans to protect our country;
12 therefore be it
13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
14 month of November 2024 as "Veterans and Military Families Month"
15 in Pennsylvania; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
17 the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
