Computing and computer science is an integral part of everyday life. From personal finance to education, to commerce, to business, just about every single facet of our lives involves computers.
Research has shown that exposure to computer science as part of school curricula can lead to more students pursuing careers in computer science.
It is absolutely essential that students get exposure to computer science in our K-12 education system. That is why I am introducing legislation which would require the Pennsylvania Department of Education to develop a state strategic plan or statewide computer science education program.
The plan would include:
A summary of the current landscape for K through 12 computer science
A plan for expanding computer science education opportunities
Development of rigorous standards and curriculum guidelines for K through 12
Defining high quality professional learning for teachers
Detailed and ongoing evaluations throughout the process
Beginning with the 2027-2028 school year and each year after each public high school would be required to offer at least one computer science course.
Please join me in supporting this critically important legislation.
