A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing October 10, 2024, as "National Day of the Republic
2 of China (Taiwan)" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, The Republic of China was established in China in
4 1912, and its government relocated to Taiwan in 1949; and
5 WHEREAS, The Republic of China has continued to exercise
6 jurisdiction over the main island of Taiwan and a number of
7 outlying islands since 1949, and it observes October 10 as its
8 National Day; and
9 WHEREAS, Taiwan is a diverse, inclusive society, comprised of
10 Han Chinese, indigenous Malayo-Polynesian peoples and immigrants
11 from all over the world; and
12 WHEREAS, Taiwan's diverse ethnic groups enrich its culture,
13 and Taiwan's multicultural history is reflected in its dialects,
14 religions, education and artistic expressions; and
15 WHEREAS, The United States Congress passed the Taiwan
16 Relations Act (TRA) in 1979 to sustain a close bilateral
17 relationship as well as to advance mutual security and
18 commercial interests between the United States and Taiwan, and
1 the TRA, together with the Six Assurances stipulated by
2 President Ronald Reagan in 1982, serves as the cornerstone of
3 United States-Taiwan relations, preserving peace and stability
4 in the Taiwan Strait; and
5 WHEREAS, Taiwan has become a resilient, peaceful and
6 prosperous democracy, as it was ranked as the second-freest
7 country in Asia by Freedom House in 2022 and shares common
8 values such as freedom, peace and democracy with the United
9 States; and
10 WHEREAS, Taiwan plays a key role in global supply chains for
11 critical industries, and it was ranked seventh in the IMD World
12 Competitiveness rankings and was the United States' eighth
13 largest trade partner in 2022; and
14 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania and Taiwan have developed an enduring
15 and mutually beneficial partnership that facilitates economic,
16 scientific, educational, cultural and people-to-people
17 exchanges; and
18 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania imported $1.53 billion in goods from
19 Taiwan and exported $545 million to Taiwan in 2022 and reopened
20 its trade and investment office in Taiwan in 2022, further
21 enhancing the robust economic relationship between the two
22 sides; and
23 WHEREAS, Both at home and abroad, the "National Day of the
24 Republic of China (Taiwan)" is recognized as a celebration of
25 its achievements in building a better society and strengthening
26 its freedom, democracy, global competitiveness and economic
27 stability, while continuing to preserve cross-strait peace and
28 stability; therefore be it
29 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize October
30 10, 2024, as "National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan)" in
