The science is undeniable: excess greenhouse gases created by human activity are trapping the sun’s heat in our atmosphere. This is warming our climate, causing increasing examples of irregular and dangerous climate activity, such as intense storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires.

In recent years, environmental marketing has changed dramatically, too. A growing number of U.S. consumers are demanding the companies they support engage in environmentally-conscious business practices. Branding your company or industry as “green” or “sustainable” is no longer a luxury; it’s a business necessity.

In response, Pennsylvania has seen a proliferation of deceptive environmental marketing tactics, commonly known as “greenwashing.” This form of marketing violates our Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law and undermines Pennsylvania consumers’ ability to make informed purchasing decisions.

My forthcoming bill would amend this existing statute to explicitly prohibit deceptive environmental marketing claims.

It’s time we ensure truth and accuracy in advertising; stop taking advantage of Pennsylvania consumers’ desire to be a part of the solution; and end the practice of greenwashing.
