THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA
SENATE RESOLUTION
No. 304
Session of
2024
INTRODUCED BY VOGEL, FONTANA, MARTIN, HAYWOOD, TARTAGLIONE,
COSTA, J. WARD, HUGHES AND BREWSTER, JUNE 4, 2024
REFERRED TO RULES AND EXECUTIVE NOMINATIONS, JUNE 4, 2024
A RESOLUTION
1 Designating May 14, 2024, as "IgA Nephropathy Awareness Day" in
2 Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, While one out of seven Americans has chronic kidney
4 disease, IgA nephropathy, also known as IgAN or Berger's
5 disease, is a lesser-known cause, which is a rare autoimmune
6 disease that attacks the kidneys; and
7 WHEREAS, IgAN occurs when immunoglobulin A (IgA), a protein
8 that usually helps the body fight infection, builds up in the
9 kidneys and clogs the tiny filtering units leading to blood in
10 the urine (hematuria) and protein in the urine (proteinuria);
11 and
12 WHEREAS, Many patients face delays in being correctly
13 diagnosed, and there is no current cure for IgAN; and
14 WHEREAS, Current treatments focus on slowing the progress of
15 the disease and preventing complications; and
16 WHEREAS, Approximately 30% of patients who have IgAN will
17 develop end-stage kidney disease and need dialysis or kidney
18 transplantation to survive; and
1 WHEREAS, Transplants can greatly improve the quality of life
2 of patients but do not guarantee that the disease will not
3 return and infect the new kidney and are not a cure because
4 patients still need to take medications to suppress the immune
5 system; and
6 WHEREAS, There is hope on the horizon for IgAN patients with
7 more than a dozen clinical trials underway developing new and
8 improved treatments; and
9 WHEREAS, "IgA Nephropathy Awareness Day" is designated to
10 raise awareness of IgA nephropathy, provide support and
11 inspiration to patients and their families and to promote the
12 research needed to lead to better diagnosis and a future cure;
13 therefore be it
14 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 14, 2024, as "IgA
15 Nephropathy Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the IgA Nephropathy
17 Foundation for their tireless efforts on this cause.
