Like many other states in the nation, Pennsylvania is experiencing a housing crisis. One estimate puts our state’s shortage at nearly 100,000 housing units, and restrictive zoning and land use regulations are among the chief factors causing this scarcity. Ultimately, this lack of housing has significantly contributed to the steep increase in housing costs that we have seen in recent years. Across the United States, from the start of 2020 to the end of 2023, rents went up 23.9% and home prices went up a staggering 37.5%. If the housing supply remains stagnant while demands continue to rise, costs will further increase.

To help address this pressing issue, I will be introducing legislation that incentivizes municipalities to revise their zoning in such a way that allows for more affordable housing. Removing local zoning obstacles to allow for the creation of more affordable homes is a vital component in increasing the availability of affordable housing in our state, and it is essential that we provide municipalities funding to undertake this endeavor.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to incentivize zoning updates and increase affordable housing here in Pennsylvania. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
