Elder abuse is a serious issue that often goes unnoticed. Nearly 1 in 10 individuals over 60 who live at home are victims of abuse. Elder abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, financial, or even neglect. In our Commonwealth, reports of elder abuse rose from 24,413 cases in 2015-16 to 36,101 cases in 2018-19.

As a member of the Aging & Older Adult Services Committee, I understand the importance of bringing to light the abuses that older individuals may go through. Many of our loved ones are elderly, and they deserve care and attention when they experience abuse. For these reasons, I plan on introducing a resolution to designate June 15, 2024, as Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Pennsylvania.

So many of us have older relatives, friends, and loved ones who are aging, and they play important roles in our lives. By shedding light on this issue, we can raise awareness in hopes of preventing further incidents of abuse and make others aware of the resources available to report abuse.

Please join me in bringing awareness to this important issue in our state.
