A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing the week of May 12 through 18, 2024, as "Food
2 Allergy Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, "Food Allergy Awareness Week" was established as a
4 national week to encourage food allergy awareness and support
5 those who are impacted by food allergies and anaphylaxis; and
6 WHEREAS, Food allergies affect approximately 20 to 33 million
7 Americans, including 5.6 million children; and
8 WHEREAS, The prevalence of food allergies appears to be
9 increasing among individuals 18 years of age or younger to
10 approximately two students in every classroom in every school in
11 the United States; and
12 WHEREAS, The nine foods that account for 90% of all food
13 allergy reactions are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, wheat, soy,
14 sesame, fish and shellfish; and
15 WHEREAS, A food allergy is an immune system response to a
16 food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful; and
17 WHEREAS, When an individual with a food allergy eats the
1 food, the individual's immune system releases massive amounts of
2 chemicals, including histamines, which trigger a cascade of
3 symptoms that can affect the respiratory system,
4 gastrointestinal tract, skin or cardiovascular system; and
5 WHEREAS, Immunotherapy is a promising treatment to prevent
6 allergic reactions, but there is currently no cure for food
7 allergies; and
8 WHEREAS, Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that
9 comes on quickly and has the potential to become life-
10 threatening; and
11 WHEREAS, Managing a food allergy on a daily basis involves
12 constant vigilance because even trace amounts of an allergen can
13 trigger an allergic reaction in some individuals; therefore be
14 it
15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
16 week of May 12 through 18, 2024, as "Food Allergy Awareness
17 Week" in Pennsylvania.
