In recognition of the unwavering dedication and sacrifice of the Armed Forces of the United States of America, I am proud to introduce a resolution designating May 18, 2024, as “Armed Forces Day” in Pennsylvania.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the establishment of  “Armed Forces Day.” This momentous occasion replaced the separate Army, Navy, and Air Force Days, aligning with the unification of these branches under the newly formed Department of Defense.  Notably, while the United States Marine Corps actively supports “Armed Forces Day,” Marines worldwide continue to celebrate “Marine Corps Day” each November 10th.

For decades, the annual presidential proclamation of “Armed Forces Day” has stood as a testament to our collective gratitude. In May 2013, the third Saturday of May was officially designated as “Armed Forces Day” by the President of the United States. This designation allows us to come together as a community and express our unwavering support for those who safeguard our nation and preserve our cherished freedoms.

I wholeheartedly invite you to join me in supporting this resolution and to take a moment to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of our service members and their families.
