A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the week of April 8 through 14, 2024, as "Local
2 Government Week" and April 10, 2024, as "Local Government
3 Day" in Pennsylvania.
4 WHEREAS, Local government in Pennsylvania is a vibrant
5 collage of more than 4,600 individual units, including 67
6 counties, 56 cities, 93 townships of the first class, more than
7 1,400 townships of the second class, more than 950 boroughs, one
8 incorporated town, 500 school districts and more than 1,500
9 municipal authorities; and
10 WHEREAS, Nearly 166,000 employees work on behalf of
11 municipalities to provide services and facilities for almost 13
12 million residents of this Commonwealth, ranging from the special
13 purpose functions of counties, school districts and municipal
14 authorities in the areas of judicial administration, social
15 welfare, education and provision of water and sewer services to
16 the more general purpose functions of cities, townships,
1 boroughs and towns such as maintenance of roads and streets,
2 police and fire protection and enforcement of ordinances and
3 land-use controls; and
4 WHEREAS, Local government comprises thousands of hardworking
5 citizen officials, many of whom work without reward, including
6 more than 1,700 volunteer firefighters; and
7 WHEREAS, Local government also relies on thousands of
8 hardworking staff members who carry out the directives of local
9 elected officials and are supported by thousands of dedicated
10 volunteers who serve on local boards and commissions; and
11 WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth rely upon the
12 dedication of their local officials in meeting many of the
13 residents' most fundamental needs in virtually all facets of
14 daily living; and
15 WHEREAS, Local government is the keystone of our democracy
16 and the foundation of our political system; and
17 WHEREAS, "Local Government Week" and "Local Government Day"
18 focus attention on the need for a strong, independent and
19 responsive local government in this Commonwealth and recognize
20 the valuable contributions made by residents serving their
21 communities; therefore be it
22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
23 week of April 8 through 14, 2024, as "Local Government Week" and
24 April 10, 2024, as "Local Government Day" in Pennsylvania; and
25 be it further
26 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend and thank
27 local government officials for their labor and great
28 contributions to this Commonwealth as the unsung heroes of
29 government.
