In Pennsylvania, an adoptee is only able to receive a summary of their original birth record which contains the names and ages of the birth parents, date and county of the birth of the child, and the name given to the child at birth. Birth parents are given the option to request to have their name redacted from the summary of the original birth record, leaving the adoptee with minimal information included in their document.

Adoptees face a confusing and complicated process that many other Pennsylvanians do not have to experience in order to obtain their original birth record. In order to address this problem, I will be introducing legislation that would allow adoptees to obtain an unredacted photocopy of their original birth record.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation that would help ensure adoptees have access to their own vital records without the possibility of information being removed by a birth parent.
