A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the month of July 2023 as "Disability Pride Month"
2 in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, All people, including those with disabilities,
4 should be guaranteed the right to receive a quality education,
5 to be productive members of our workforce, to raise families, to
6 exert control and choice over their own lives and to have equal
7 opportunity to access and participate in all facets of life; and
8 WHEREAS, Having a disability should be seen as a natural part
9 of human diversity; and
10 WHEREAS, Many people with disabilities share a cultural
11 experience and history; and
12 WHEREAS, More than 30 years ago, the Americans with
13 Disabilities Act of 1990 was signed into law, ending
14 discrimination against and providing equal opportunity for
15 persons with disabilities in employment, education, government
16 services, public accommodations, commercial facilities and
17 transportation; and
18 WHEREAS, In spite of the Americans with Disabilities Act of
1 1990, people with disabilities continue to face tremendous
2 challenges in our society that test their resolve
3 sociologically, emotionally and psychologically, as well as
4 negative cultural assumptions based on fears and myths that need
5 to be eliminated and replaced with presumptions of competence,
6 strength and individual worth; and
7 WHEREAS, "Disability Pride Month" is a celebration that seeks
8 to educate and change the way that people think about and define
9 those with disabilities by promoting the belief that disability
10 is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which
11 people living with disabilities can take pride; and
12 WHEREAS, This year, "Disability Pride Month" includes a
13 recognition of the 24th anniversary of the passing of the
14 Olmstead Act, an important component of the Americans with
15 Disabilities Act, and celebrations in communities across this
16 Commonwealth to promote accessibility, inclusion and diversity;
17 therefore be it
18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
19 month of July 2023 as "Disability Pride Month" in Pennsylvania;
20 and be it further
21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge residents of
22 this Commonwealth to honor Americans with disabilities by
23 educating themselves on ways to support and encourage
24 understanding of persons with disabilities in our schools,
25 within our diverse workforce and in our communities.
