AN ACT
1 Amending Title 35 (Health and Safety) of the Pennsylvania
2 Consolidated Statutes, in emergency medical services system,
3 further providing for emergency medical responders, for
4 emergency medical technicians, for advanced emergency medical
5 technicians and for paramedics.
6 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
7 hereby enacts as follows:
8 Section 1. Sections 8114(b)(5), 8115(b)(5), 8116(b)(5) and
9 (c) introductory paragraph and 8117(c)(5) and (d) introductory
10 paragraph of Title 35 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes
11 are amended to read:
12 § 8114. Emergency medical responders.

14 (b) Certification.--The department shall certify as an EMR
15 an individual who meets all of the following:

17 (5) Has passed a written EMR certification examination
18 [approved by the department.] administered by an EMS
19 educational institute as specified under section 8113(d)(1)
1 (relating to emergency medical services providers).

3 § 8115. Emergency medical technicians.

5 (b) Certification.--The department shall certify as an EMT
6 an individual who meets all of the following:

8 (5) Has passed a written EMT certification examination
9 [approved by the department.] administered by an EMS
10 educational institute as specified under section 8113(d)(1)
11 (relating to emergency medical services providers).

13 § 8116. Advanced emergency medical technicians.

15 (b) Certification.--The department shall certify as an
16 advanced EMT an individual who meets all of the following:
17 * * *
18 (5) Has passed a written advanced EMT certification
19 examination [approved by the department.] administered by an
20 EMS educational institute as specified under section 8113(d)
21 (1) (relating to emergency medical services providers).
22 (c) Biennial registration.--An advanced EMT's certification
23 is deemed registered when the certification is issued. The
24 initial registration shall expire as set forth in section
25 8113(n) [(relating to emergency medical services providers)].
26 Except for the initial registration period, an advanced EMT must
27 register the advanced EMT certification at two-year intervals by
28 completing an application for biennial registration on a form or
29 through an electronic process, as prescribed by regulation of
30 the department. The following shall apply:

2 § 8117. Paramedics.

4 (c) Certification.--The department shall certify as a
5 paramedic an EMT or advanced EMT who meets all of the following:

7 (5) Has passed a written paramedic certification
8 examination [approved by the department.] administered by an
9 EMS educational institute as specified under section 8113(d)
10 (1) (relating to emergency medical services providers).
11 (d) Biennial registration.--A paramedic's certification is
12 deemed registered when the certification is issued. The initial
13 registration shall expire as set forth in section 8113(n)
14 [(relating to emergency medical services providers)]. Except for
15 the initial registration period, a paramedic must register the
16 paramedic certification at two-year intervals by completing an
17 application for biennial registration on a form or through an
18 electronic process as prescribed by regulation of the
19 department. The following shall apply:

21 Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
