This bill directs the Department of Human Services (DHS) to implement an extension of foster care services aimed at supporting individuals transitioning into adulthood. The services will be voluntary and available to individuals who were in the custody of the Department at the age of eighteen or who achieved legal permanency through guardianship or adoption at sixteen or older, provided they are under twenty-one. To qualify for these extended services, individuals must meet specific criteria, such as completing secondary education, enrolling in postsecondary education, participating in employment programs, working a minimum number of hours, or being unable to engage in these activities due to a medical condition.
Additionally, the bill mandates the Director of Human Services to create rules for the implementation of these provisions and requires the Department to seek available funding to support the initiative. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2026, and includes an emergency clause for immediate implementation upon passage and approval.
