The bill amends the Mary Rippy Violent Crime Offenders Registration Act by updating Section 599.1 of Title 57 of the Oklahoma Statutes. It expands public access to the Oklahoma Sex Offender Registry and the Mary Rippy Violent Crime Offenders Registry, allowing individuals, businesses, and organizations to search for names in these registries to verify suitability for employment or volunteering, particularly in roles that may involve working with children. The bill outlines three methods for conducting these searches, including contacting the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, performing a self-initiated online search, or reaching out to local law enforcement or the Department of Corrections.
Additionally, the bill mandates that the Department of Corrections develop policies and procedures to facilitate these searches and provide comprehensive information about registered individuals, including their full name, aliases, crime details, and current residence, among other pertinent data. Notably, the registries will now be searchable by school, place of worship, and employer. The bill also includes a provision that protects governmental agencies from liability for releasing information from these registries when it pertains to assessing potential risks to children or employment suitability. The act is set to take effect on November 1, 2026.
