This bill amends Section 589 of the Oklahoma Sex Offenders Registration Act to prohibit fire departments from employing individuals who have been convicted of offenses requiring registration under the Act. Specifically, it establishes that any person who has received a guilty verdict or has pled guilty or nolo contendere to such offenses, including those under deferred judgment provisions, cannot be employed as a firefighter. Violators of this provision will be guilty of a misdemeanor upon conviction.
Additionally, the bill defines "firefighter" to include both volunteer firefighters and permanent salaried professional members of any fire department in Oklahoma. The effective date for this legislation is set for November 1, 2026.
