This bill amends the existing law regarding the commissioning of peace officers in Oklahoma. It mandates that the Commissioner of Public Safety shall commission no more than two members from the security teams of both the Oklahoma State Senate and the Oklahoma House of Representatives, in conjunction with either the President Pro Tempore of the Senate or the Speaker of the House. The bill also clarifies that these commissioned officers must obtain and maintain certification as full-time peace officers and outlines their jurisdiction, which includes powers of arrest and enforcement of criminal laws, effective only while performing official duties.

Additionally, the bill specifies that the jurisdiction of the commissioned officers will be in accordance with certain sections of the Oklahoma Statutes and includes the powers granted to the sergeant at arms. It also establishes that the Commissioner has the authority to set requirements for the commission, including the ability to suspend or revoke it. Importantly, the commissioned officers will not be considered employees of the Department of Public Safety, and their actions will not be attributed to the Department. The act is set to take effect on November 1, 2026.
