This bill permits the teaching of Life Skills as an elective course in public schools in Oklahoma, contingent upon the availability of funding. The areas of instruction for Life Skills include nutrition, automobile maintenance, household repairs, first aid, etiquette, professional development, basic financial skills, career pathways, government understanding, self-discipline, time management, and mental health basics. School districts are authorized to provide this instruction to students in grades six through twelve and can determine the timing for each area of instruction. Additionally, districts may partner with the career and technology education system to enhance the teaching of Life Skills.
The bill specifies that Life Skills instruction can be integrated into existing courses, and it can be delivered in person, virtually, or through a hybrid model. Notably, specialized teaching certification is not required for instructors of Life Skills. Schools are required to adhere to life logic standards or workforce readiness course standards for implementation. The act is set to take effect on November 1, 2025.
