The Food is Medicine Act establishes a framework for improving health outcomes for Medicaid members with nutrition-related chronic diseases in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Health Care Authority is directed to seek federal approval to provide coverage for nutrition supports under the state Medicaid program. The Act outlines various nutrition services that may be covered, including case management, nutrition counseling, meals, nutrition prescriptions, and grocery provisions. Additionally, the Act encourages the inclusion of community-based organizations and local growers in the implementation of these programs to promote the purchase of locally grown food.

Furthermore, the State Department of Education is tasked with providing technical assistance to schools applying for grants under the Oklahoma Farm to School Program Act, aimed at expanding student access to fresh and healthy food. The Act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and includes provisions for noncodification and codification of new laws. An emergency clause is included to ensure the Act is enacted promptly for the public's health and safety.
