The "Growing Minds, Active Kids Act" aims to enhance the physical and mental well-being of students in Oklahoma by mandating daily recess in schools. Under this act, school districts are required to provide at least forty minutes of daily recess for students in full-day prekindergarten, kindergarten, and grades one through five. For grades six through eight, a recommendation of thirty minutes of daily recess is encouraged. The act emphasizes the importance of recess as a necessary break from academic work, promoting physical activity, social interaction, and improved focus among students. Additionally, the daily recess must occur outside unless weather conditions necessitate an indoor setting.
The legislation also includes provisions for students with disabilities, ensuring that their daily recess aligns with their individualized education programs (IEPs) or Section 504 plans. However, virtual charter schools are exempt from these requirements. The act is designed to complement existing physical education requirements and is set to take effect immediately upon passage and approval, highlighting the urgency of promoting student health and well-being through structured playtime.
