This bill amends the Oklahoma Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Life Skills Education Act to expand its applicability by incorporating new provisions focused on fentanyl abuse prevention and drug poisoning awareness. Specifically, it mandates that each school district provide annual, research-based instruction on these topics for students in grades six through twelve. The instruction must cover various aspects, including suicide prevention, awareness of local resources, and health education related to fentanyl use and abuse. Additionally, the bill allows organizations such as higher education institutions, libraries, and community service organizations to provide this instruction.
Furthermore, the bill directs the Governor to designate a week as Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Week in public schools, during which age-appropriate instruction on fentanyl abuse prevention will be provided. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and includes an emergency clause for immediate implementation upon passage and approval.
