This bill amends existing laws regarding school district elections in Oklahoma, specifically altering the dates for general and primary elections for members of the board of education. The general election will now take place on the second Tuesday of November in odd-numbered years and on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November in even-numbered years. The primary election is shifted to the second Tuesday in June for odd-numbered years and the third Tuesday in June for even-numbered years, with provisions for aligning with Presidential Preferential Primaries when applicable. Additionally, the bill clarifies that if only two candidates qualify, both will appear on the general election ballot, while if more than two qualify, a primary election will determine the top two candidates for the general election.
Furthermore, the bill introduces new requirements for candidates declaring their candidacy for school board positions. Candidates must now include their political party affiliation or indicate their nonpartisan status if running as independents, which will be displayed next to their names on both the primary and general election ballots. The filing period for candidates is also modified to begin at 8:00 a.m. on the first Wednesday in April and end at 5:00 p.m. on the following Friday. The act is set to take effect on December 1, 2025.
