This bill establishes new regulations for railroad safety in Oklahoma, specifically focusing on the installation and maintenance of hot bearings detector systems along main lines. A hot bearings detector is defined as an infrared device that alerts train operators to any overheating of train components such as bearings, axles, or wheels. The bill mandates that any person, firm, or corporation operating a train in the state must install and maintain these detectors at least every ten miles along each main line, which is defined as a segment of track that carries over five million gross tons of traffic annually.
Additionally, the bill grants the Department of Public Safety the authority to issue citations for violations of these provisions, with fines ranging from a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $5,000. The new law is set to be codified as Section 104 of Title 66 in the Oklahoma Statutes and will take effect on November 1, 2025.
