This bill amends Section 5-142 of Title 70 of the Oklahoma Statutes, which governs criminal history record checks for school employees. It requires that a letter from a previous school district, when a teacher applies for a new position, must include an attestation regarding any allegations of inappropriate behavior with students and whether there are any ongoing investigations related to such behavior. The bill also updates statutory language and references, and it establishes that teachers who have been employed full-time in Oklahoma schools may not need to undergo a new criminal history check if they provide a recent check and the required letter from their previous employer.
Additionally, the bill specifies that teachers employed prior to May 19, 2020, who lack the necessary criminal history checks must complete them upon the renewal of their teaching certificates or by July 1, 2022, depending on their employment status. It clarifies that the provisions do not apply to part-time or temporary technology center employees or law enforcement officers already employed by an agency at the time of their application to a school district. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and includes an emergency clause for immediate implementation upon passage.
