8 A Resolution recognizing May 12 through May 18, 2024,
8 as National Police Week and recognizing May 15, 2024,
9 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in the State of
9 Oklahoma.

12 WHEREAS, across the United States, the week of May 12 through
12
13 May 18, 2024, is being recognized as "National Police Week"; and
13
14 WHEREAS, on October 1, 1962, the United States Congress approved
14
15 a joint resolution authorizing the President of the United States to
15
16 designate May 15 of each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" in
16
17 honor of law enforcement officers who have been killed, disabled, or
17
18 otherwise injured in the line of duty and the calendar week during
18
19 which May 15 occurs as "National Police Week"; and
19
20 WHEREAS, by proclamation dated May 4, 1963, President John F.
20
21 Kennedy designated May 15, 1963, and each succeeding May 15 as
21
22 "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week of May 12 through May 18,
22
23 1963, and each succeeding calendar week during which May 15 occurs
23
24 as "National Police Week"; and

1 WHEREAS, federal, state, local, and tribal police officers,
1
2 sheriffs, and other law enforcement officers in the State of
2
3 Oklahoma and across the United States serve with valor, dignity, and
3
4 integrity; and
4
5 WHEREAS, law enforcement officers are charged with pursuing
5
6 justice for all individuals and performing the duties of a law
6
7 enforcement officer with fidelity to the constitutional rights of
7
8 the public that the law enforcement officers serve; and
8
9 WHEREAS, the Oklahoma House of Representatives expresses strong
9
10 support for law enforcement officers in Oklahoma and across the
10
11 United States in the efforts that those officers undertake to build
11
12 safer and more secure communities; and
12
13 WHEREAS, the Oklahoma House of Representatives recognizes the
13
14 law enforcement community for the continual selfless acts of
14
15 sacrifice and bravery carried out by the members of that community;
15
16 and
16
17 WHEREAS, law enforcement officers swear an oath to uphold the
17
18 public trust with their lives, if need be, even though, through the
18
19 performance of the duties of a law enforcement officer, the officers
19
20 may become targets for senseless acts of violence; and
20
21 WHEREAS, within the last year, one hundred and thirty-six law
21
22 enforcement officers from across the United States have made the
22
23 ultimate sacrifice; and

1 WHEREAS, one Oklahoma law enforcement officer died in the line
1
2 of duty within the last year, Captain John Robert Randolph III, of
2
3 the Ringling Police Department; and
3
4 WHEREAS, the Oklahoma House of Representatives honors the memory
4
5 of the hundreds of law enforcement officers who have given their
5
6 lives in the line of duty in this state and throughout the United
6
7 States.

8 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

9 OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:

10 THAT May 12 through May 18, 2024, is hereby recognized by the
10
11 Oklahoma House of Representatives as "National Police Week" and
11
12 recognizes May 15, 2024, as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" in
12
13 Oklahoma.
13
14 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives expresses condolences
14
15 to the loved ones of each law enforcement officer who has made the
15
16 ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
