7 A Resolution recognizing May 6 through May 12 as
7 National Nurses Week; celebrating the impact of
8 nurses in Oklahoma.

11 WHEREAS, beginning in 1991, National Nurses Week is celebrated
11
12 annually from May 6, also known as "National Recognition Day for
12
13 Nurses", through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the
13
14 founder of modern nursing; and
14
15 WHEREAS, National Nurses Week is a time of year to reflect on
15
16 the important contributions that nurses make to provide safe, high-
16
17 quality health care; and
17
18 WHEREAS, nurses serve on the front lines, risking their lives
18
19 treating the injured and sick during wartime, natural disasters, and
19
20 public health emergencies, including the COVID–19 pandemic; and
20
21 WHEREAS, nurses are known to be patient advocates, acting to
21
22 protect the lives of individuals under their care; and

 1 WHEREAS, nurses represent the largest single component of the
1
2 health care profession, with an estimated population of more than
2
3 four million registered nurses in the United States; and
3
4 WHEREAS, when nurse staffing levels increase, the risk of
4
5 patient complications and lengthy hospital stays decrease, resulting
5
6 in cost savings; and
6
7 WHEREAS, nurses are the cornerstone of the public health
7
8 infrastructure, promoting healthy lifestyles and educating
8
9 communities on disease prevention and health promotion; and
9
10 WHEREAS, nurses touch the lives of the people of the United
10
11 States through every stage of life.

12 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

13 OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
13
14 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives supports the goals
14
15 and ideals of National Nurses Week, recognizes the significant
15
16 contributions of nurses to the health care system in Oklahoma, and
16
17 encourages the citizens of Oklahoma to observe National Nurses Week
17
18 and understand the importance of nurses in the lives of patients.
