11 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing Oklahoma State
12 University Coach John Smith's accomplishments and
12 work in collegiate wrestling.

14 WHEREAS, in 1992, John Smith became the head wrestling coach at
15
15 Oklahoma State University (OSU) where OSU produced five NCAA team
16
16 championships, 33 NCAA individual championships, 490 dual wins, 153
17
17 All-America honors, 23 team conference championships, 132 individual
18
18 conference championships and two Hodge Trophy winners; and
19
19 WHEREAS, Coach Smith's accomplishments place him among the top
20
20 coaches in the history of the sport; and
21
21 WHEREAS, Coach Smith's 490-73-6 career dual record gives him the
22
22 most wins in school history and the third-most wins in the history
23
23 of Division I wrestling; and

1 WHEREAS, Coach Smith's numbers for All-Americans, conference
1
2 championships, and individual conference champions are the most at
2
3 OSU by a wide margin and are believed to be the most in NCAA
3
4 wrestling history; and
4
5 WHEREAS, Coach Smith also coached at the world level, coaching
5
6 Team USA at the Olympics in 2000 and 2012, at the World
6
7 Championships in 1998, 2009, 2010, and 2011, at the World Cup in
7
8 1997, and coaching the USA Women's Cadet World Team in 2018; and
8
9 WHEREAS, prior to taking over as Oklahoma State head coach,
9
10 Coach Smith put together a wrestling career that squarely places him
10
11 in the conversation for the greatest American wrestler ever; and
11
12 WHEREAS, Coach Smith won six consecutive world championships as
12
13 a competitor from 1987 to 1992, including gold medals at the 1988
13
14 Olympic Games in Seoul, gold medals at the 1992 Olympic Games in
14
15 Barcelona, two gold medals in two attempts at the Pan American
15
16 Games, two gold medals in two attempts at the Goodwill Games, and
16
17 two NCAA individual championships for Oklahoma State; and
17
18 WHEREAS, Coach Smith's Cowboy wrestling career also included
18
19 three All-America honors, three conference championships, the NWCA
19
20 Collegiate Wrestler of the Year award, and more than 150 career wins
20
21 to rank as the most in program history; and
21
22 WHEREAS, Smith is a Distinguished Member of the National
22
23 Wrestling Hall of Fame, a two-time selection as the National

1 Wrestling Coaches Association coach of the year, and a 15-time

2 selection as conference coach of the year; and
2
3 WHEREAS, Coach Smith was also the first wrestler to be inducted
3
4 into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and is a member of the Oklahoma
4
5 Sports Hall of Fame.

6 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

7 OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE, THE SENATE

8 CONCURRING THEREIN:
8
9 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives and the Oklahoma
9
10 State Senate join in recognizing the many accomplishments of Coach
10
11 John Smith and his impact on wrestling, and to extend sincere
11
12 appreciation for his work and dedication.
