11 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing Oklahoma State
11 University mascot Pistol Pete.

14 WHEREAS, on October 28, 2023, Oklahoma State University (OSU)
14
15 celebrated the 100th anniversary of its beloved mascot Pistol Pete;
15
16 and
16
17 WHEREAS, the Pistol Pete mascot was modeled after Frank "Pistol
17
18 Pete" Eaton, a former cowboy, gunslinger, scout, trail rider, and
18
19 law enforcement officer; and
19
20 WHEREAS, after seeing Frank Eaton lead the 1923 Armistice Day
20
21 parade in Stillwater, Oklahoma, a group of students from what was
21
22 then the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College asked
22
23 permission to use his "Pistol Pete" persona as the symbol

 1 representing what they believed to be the true spirit of their

2 school; and
2
3 WHEREAS, Frank "Pistol Pete" Eaton relished his role as the
3
4 original cowboy as a regular fixture on campus and at the school
4
5 sporting events; and
5
6 WHEREAS, after Eaton's death in 1958 at 97 years old, "Pistol
6
7 Pete" was made the official mascot symbol of OSU where 96 men have
7
8 stepped forward to carry on the "cowboy spirit" tradition and
8
9 legacy; and
9
10 WHEREAS, "Pistol Pete" is now arguably one of the Nation's most
10
11 recognized college mascots and is the only mascot modeled after a
11
12 real-life folk hero.

13 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
13
14 OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE, THE SENATE
14
15 CONCURRING THEREIN:
15
16 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives and the Oklahoma
16
17 State Senate join in recognizing Oklahoma State University's beloved
17
18 mascot Pistol Pete, and to extend sincere appreciation for Pistol
18
19 Pete carrying on Frank Eaton's legacy and cowboy spirit.
