6 AS INTRODUCED

7 A Resolution raising awareness for ovarian cancer;
7 and recognizing the Month of September as National
8 Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

11 WHEREAS, National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month helps to remind
11
12 us of those who suffer from this disease and that a cure has not yet
12
13 been found; and
13
14 WHEREAS, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer
14
15 deaths of women in the United States and causes more deaths than any
15
16 other gynecologic cancer; and
16
17 WHEREAS, in the United States, a woman's lifetime risk of being
17
18 diagnosed with ovarian cancer is about 1 in 78; and
18
19 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates 19,680 cases of
19
20 ovarian cancer will be newly diagnosed in 2024 and 12,740
20
21 individuals will die from the disease nationwide; and
21
22 WHEREAS, the five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is fifty
22
23 percent and survival rates vary greatly depending on the stage of
23
24 diagnosis; and

 1 WHEREAS, Oklahoma currently has the highest mortality rate in
1
2 the nation related to ovarian cancer; and
2
3 WHEREAS, there is not currently an effective diagnostic tool for
3
4 screening, and early detection does not exist; and
4
5 WHEREAS, the best way to observe Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
5
6 is done by pursuing education, especially ways to identify early
6
7 stages and by participating in fundraising activities with the
7
8 purpose of providing research and education for ovarian cancer.

9 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

10 OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:

11 THAT, the Oklahoma House of Representatives supports the
11
12 recognition of the month of September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness
12
13 month in Oklahoma, and encourages all Oklahomans to learn more about
13
14 the disease as this can save lives and protect the health and well-
14
15 being of countless women.
