8 A Resolution recognizing Coach Barry Switzer’s
8 distinguished career.

12 WHEREAS, Barry Switzer joined the University of Oklahoma (OU) as
12
13 an assistant coach before the 1966 season, was named offensive
13
14 coordinator in 1967, and served as head coach from 1973 to 1988; and
14
15 WHEREAS, Coach Switzer is tied with Bud Wilkinson for the most
15
16 national championships in program history, winning titles in 1974,
16
17 1975, and 1985, and finishing his head coaching career with a 157-
17
18 29-4 record, good for a .837 winning percentage; and
18
19 WHEREAS, Coach Switzer went undefeated in his first thirty
19
20 games, finished with a winning record each season, and won twelve
20
21 Big Eight Conference titles in his sixteen years as OU’s seventeenth
21
22 head coach; and

1 WHEREAS, Switzer thrived against OU’s biggest rivals, posting a
1
2 12-5 record against Nebraska, 9-5-2 against Texas, and 15-1 against
2
3 Oklahoma State University; and
3
4 WHEREAS, his 1986 and 1987 teams led the nation in scoring and
4
5 his teams posted a 77-10-1 home record and 63-9-1 on the road for
5
6 the most true road wins and best true-road-game winning percentage
6
7 in program history; and
7
8 WHEREAS, his players earned twenty-eight consensus All-America
8
9 honors, as well as Billy Sims’ 1978 Heisman Trophy, eighteen
9
10 individual national honors, and eight College Football Hall of Fame
10
11 inductions; and
11
12 WHEREAS, he produced ninety-four NFL Draft picks, with sixteen
12
13 first-rounders and two number-one overall selections, Lee Roy Selmon
13
14 and Billy Sims; and
14
15 WHEREAS, he served as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 1994
15
16 to 1997, posting the best winning percentage in franchise history
16
17 and leading the 1995 team to a Super Bowl title. He is one of only
17
18 three coaches to win a national championship and a Super Bowl; and
18
19 WHEREAS, Switzer was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame,
19
20 Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, and College Football Hall of Fame; and
20
21 WHEREAS, Switzer has always heavily involved himself with
21
22 community service efforts, even in retirement. He has served as an
22
23 honorary coach for Special Olympics Oklahoma for over forty-five
23
24 years; and

1 WHEREAS, for more than five decades, Sooner Nation has rallied

2 behind Coach Switzer, inspired by his iconic leadership, legendary
2
3 confidence, and deep loyalty to the University of Oklahoma.

4 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE 2ND SESSION

5 OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
5
6 THAT the Oklahoma State Senate recognizes the distinguished
6
7 career of Coach Barry Switzer and extends appreciation for his
7
8 continued service to the State of Oklahoma.
