8 A Resolution honoring Derrick L. Shepard; and
8 recognizing April 8 as Derrick Shepard Day.

11 WHEREAS, Derrick L. Shepard, a cherished husband, father,
11
12 athlete, coach, friend, and Oklahoman, whose life was tragically cut
12
13 short by a heart attack on August 4, 1999, at the age of 35; and
13
14 WHEREAS, Derrick was a starting wide receiver on the 1985
14
15 University of Oklahoma National Championship team and played
15
16 professional football from 1987 to 1991 for the Dallas Cowboys, New
16
17 Orleans Saints, and Washington Redskins; and
17
18 WHEREAS, after his professional football career, Derrick
18
19 dedicated his life to coaching and mentoring young athletes at U.S.
19
20 Grant High School, the University of Oklahoma, and in Wyoming; and
20
21 WHEREAS, Derrick's legacy remains evident through the lives of
21
22 his loving wife, Cheri, his children, Ashleigh, Shelby, and
22
23 Sterling, his grandchildren, and all those who were fortunate to
23
24 call him a teammate, a loved one, or a friend; and

1 WHEREAS, Derrick's relentless pursuit of his dreams, despite the

2 odds, serves as an inspiration to all Oklahomans.

3 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
3
4 OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:

5 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives hereby declares April
5
6 8 as Derrick Shepard Day in recognition of his enduring legacy and
6
7 his significant contributions to his community, the University of
7
8 Oklahoma, and the State of Oklahoma.
