9 A Resolution to raise awareness for organ donation;
9 recognizing the Month of April 2024 as National
10 Donate Life Month.

13 WHEREAS, one of the most meaningful gifts that a human being can
13
14 bestow upon another is the gift of life. In the last 30 years,
14
15 Donate Life America and the Donate Life Community have registered
15
16 170 million organ, eye, and tissue donors in the United States; and
16
17 WHEREAS, over 103,000 men, women, and children are currently on
17
18 the national waiting list for organ transplantation, of which nearly
18
19 741 reside in Oklahoma; and
19
20 WHEREAS, 645 transplantations occurred in the calendar year 2023
20
21 thanks to the generosity of 21,201 deceased and living donors, of
21
22 which 553 transplant patients and 268 deceased and living donors
22
23 were from Oklahoma; and

 1 WHEREAS, more than 2.5 million people throughout the country,
1
2 including Oklahoma, benefit annually from tissue transplantation
2
3 thanks to thousands of tissue donors; and
3
4 WHEREAS, the need for organ, eye, and tissue donation remains
4
5 critical as one new patient is added to the national waiting list
5
6 for an organ transplant every 10 minutes and each day roughly 20
6
7 people die due to the lack of available organs; and
7
8 WHEREAS, about 1,956,000 Oklahomans have already registered
8
9 their decision to give the gift of life through organ and tissue
9
10 donation on their driver license; and
10
11 WHEREAS, LifeShare of Oklahoma, the nonprofit organ procurement
11
12 organization, which is dedicated to the recovery of organs and
12
13 tissue for transplantation therapy in Oklahoma, with a mission to
13
14 honor donors and save lives through organ and tissue donation; and
14
15 WHEREAS, in 2003, the first National Donate Life Month campaign
15
16 was launched. National Donate Life Month takes place in April and
16
17 features an entire month of activities to help encourage Americans
17
18 to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors and to honor those that
18
19 have saved lives through the gift of donation.
19
20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
20
21 OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
21
22 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives supports the
22
23 recognition of the month of April 2024 as National Donate Life Month
23
24 and encourage all residents to consider giving life through organ

2 registry by visiting www.lifeshareoklahoma.org or when renewing
2
3 their driver license.
