10 A Concurrent Resolution applauding and recognizing
10 the many contributions made by Oklahoma women to our
11 Nation; recognizing and celebrating March as national
11 Women’s History Month; and directing distribution.

15 WHEREAS, Oklahoma women have made historic contributions to the
15
16 development, growth, and strength of our state and nation in
16
17 countless ways; and
17
18 WHEREAS, even though women did not yet have the right to vote,
18
19 in 1907, Kate Barnard became the first woman elected to a statewide
19
20 office in Oklahoma, and one of the first women elected to a
20
21 statewide office in the country; and
21
22 WHEREAS, in 1933, Angie Debo received a Ph.D. in history from
22
23 the University of Oklahoma, and though she would never hold a
23
24 position in a history department at a university because of gender

1 discrimination, she became known as Oklahoma’s greatest historian,
1
2 writing nine history books, particularly focusing on the history of
2
3 Oklahoma, the Tribal Nations, and the relations between them and the
3
4 state and federal governments; and
4
5 WHEREAS, in 1958, Clara Luper and students from the Oklahoma
5
6 City NAACP Youth Council staged the nation’s first nonviolent lunch
6
7 counter sit-in at Katz Drug Store; and
7
8 WHEREAS, in the 1990s, Oklahoman and NASA Astronaut Shannon
8
9 Lucid set records for the most time in space by a woman and then for
9
10 the longest-duration space flight by any U.S. astronaut; and
10
11 WHEREAS, Oklahoma women have made significant contributions in
11
12 other areas as well, including medicine, business, literature, the
12
13 arts, and more; and
13
14 WHEREAS, Oklahoma joins the rest of the country in observation
14
15 of national Women’s History Month during March.

16 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE 2ND SESSION
16
17 OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

18 CONCURRING THERIN:
18
19 THAT the Oklahoma State Legislature applauds and recognizes the
19
20 many contributions made by Oklahoma women throughout the nation’s
20
21 history.
21
22 THAT the Oklahoma State Legislature recognizes and celebrates
22
23 March as national Women’s History Month.
