9 AS INTRODUCED
10 A Concurrent Resolution to raise awareness for kidney
disease and kidney failure; and designating March
11 2024 to be Kidney Month in Oklahoma.

14 WHEREAS, the National Kidney Foundation designated March as
15 National Kidney Month to help spread awareness about kidney disease
16 and the ways it can be detected and prevented; and
17 WHEREAS, kidneys serve many important health functions,
18 including filtering waste from the blood, directing the production
19 of red blood cells, and regulating fluid and blood pressure levels;
20 and
21 WHEREAS, it is estimated that one in seven American adults has
22 kidney disease and that one in three adults is at high risk for
23 developing kidney disease; and

1 WHEREAS, kidney disease can cause several health problems, such
2 as cardiovascular disease, heart attack, high blood pressure,
3 stroke, kidney failure, and nerve damage; and
4 WHEREAS, the risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes,
5 family history, high blood pressure, and old age; and
6 WHEREAS, African Americans are at an increased risk for chronic
7 kidney disease and kidney failure; and
8 WHEREAS, nine out of ten people who have kidney disease do not
9 know they have it; and
10 WHEREAS, the symptoms of kidney disease may include swelling of
11 the face, abdomen, or extremities; bloody or foamy urine; painful
12 urination; fatigue; or increased thirst; and
13 WHEREAS, early detection and treatment of kidney disease can
14 slow or prevent disease progression; and
15 WHEREAS, according to the National Kidney Foundation, kidney
16 disease risk can be reduced by quitting smoking, regular exercise,
17 maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure and blood
18 sugar, and avoiding excessive use of pain medication; and
19 WHEREAS, the Oklahoma Legislature has an opportunity to join a
20 national awareness to promote kidney health; and
21 WHEREAS, the Legislature designates the month of March in 2024
22 as Kidney Month to raise awareness regarding kidney disease and
23 kidney failure.

1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
2 OF THE 2nd SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE, THE SENATE
3 CONCURRING THEREIN:
4 THAT the Oklahoma Legislature supports the designation of the
5 month of March in 2024, as Kidney Month.
